Air Quotes in Timber Sky
A tree beyond the window
portal to lush spring green
promise of growth, beauty
displayed and unreachable
Beyond, a low-slung crescent moon
hovers between Mars and Venus
celestial air quotes
in red and greenish white
sarcasm lost on me
exhausted gender reference
dwindling in timber sky
Maybe the tree ‘gets it’
Doug
Old man, dapper, ish
cord-patched elbows
hint of sheen
shakes head at teen
with denims
hanging
boxer-briefs above
the waistline
one more head-shake
youth!
because the elder’s unaware
when Doug was ten, or so
and beaten
for the hundredth time, or so
through quiet tears Doug vowed
to NEVER feel
another belt
again
Window on the 31st Floor
An eagle in flight
obliterates my view
uncaring, unconcerned
with the president
war, refugees
even that neighbor
who plays shit music
then smiles and says
good morning
like nothing’s wrong
